The Program: Bringing Balance to the Four
In our clinical experience, we have found that the Migraine Program addresses the following imbalances that may result in migraines:
- Neurohormonal system: This area includes the activities of the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the glands that produce steroid hormones, namely the ovaries, testes, and adrenal glands. Our goal is to restore the hormones that are produced by these glands to levels that are appropriate for the individual. These levels are different for each person, and so the recommended doses of various hormones for each patient can vary significantly from one person to another.
- Pineal Gland: This gland balances the cyclic production of the neurotransmitter serotonin and the hormone melatonin, both of which are key players in migraine, so our goal here is to reset the function of the pineal gland. Serotonin is the precursor of melatonin, thus the relationship between these substances is an important one to watch. To help achieve and maintain an optimal balance between the pineal gland’s function and the remaining systems, the herb kava root is commonly recommended in the Migraine Program.
- Digestive system: Harmony in the digestive system tract includes achieving a healthy intestinal flora that promotes regular elimination and proper absorption of nutrients, which we have found is essential for avoidance of migraine. Given that 70 percent of migraineurs also have some type of gastrointestinal disorder, restoration of balance within the digestive system is a critical part of the Migraine Program. We have found, for example, that constipation, which most migraineurs experience, must be resolved in order to eliminate migraine.
- Magnesium balance: Another factor in this part of the program is achieving a balance between two critical minerals-magnesium and calcium-as an imbalance between these substances can change the electrical activity of the cell membranes which, in our clincial experience, is a crucial factor in migraine.
- Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems: As we work to balance the four systems mentioned above, we are also simultaneously working toward a balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which is the ultimate goal of the Migraine Program. Balancing these two systems is critical to the success of the Migraine Program.
It is very important to understand that balancing your physiology is a process and takes significant experience. Your Migraine Program will not only include what to take, but how much and when. In addition, there are virtually no side effects related to the use of bio identical hormones, vitamins, supplements, and minerals used in the Migraine Program.
